Dr. David Schary is a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate (SC #8800) with a PhD in Sport and Exercise Psychology, an MEd in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and is a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (#1557). He serves as the Director of Mental Health and Performance for Winthrop Athletics and teaches in the Exercise Science program at Winthrop University. His approach blends performance psychology with evidence-based mental health care to support clients across a wide range of challenges. He specializes in working with athletes of all levels, adults navigating fitness and identity, couples facing communication issues or major life transitions, and individuals managing anxiety, stress, sleep concerns, or burnout. He is also pursuing advanced training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I).
He uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) as the foundation of his approach — two highly effective, research-backed models for building psychological flexibility, managing difficult thoughts and emotions, and making meaningful behavioral changes. His work also draws from lifestyle and metabolic psychology, helping clients make small, sustainable changes in key areas that support mental health: sleep and recovery, physical activity, nutrition, and social connection. He takes a whole-person view of well-being, aiming to help clients create healthier routines and deeper alignment with their values. Clients describe him as clear, collaborative, and thoughtful. Whether an athlete, part of a couple, or someone simply seeking support to live a more balanced and intentional life, he strives to provide a space where meaningful growth can happen.
